I’m an Arab belly dancer born and raised in the US. I understand all of this already. I just feel that 1. the Middle East is very different from the us and 2. to say no, we are not/better than strippers, is still to slut shame strippers. you can have a belly dance positive ad campaign without comparing them to anyone else
I honestly see no slut shaming here. She’s saying plain and clear that these two industries are not the same. To just put just a belly dance picture for a campaign is like showing a picture of a dog to someone that doesn’t know breed differences and expecting them to understand. She never put down the strippers, she never called them offensive names, she never said that we are better than them. She put them next to belly dancers and basically said “There is a difference.”
The reason why she put strippers next to belly dancers in the first place, if you actually read, is because she believes that everyone is making horrible comments because they believe belly dance to equal stripping. What she is doing is separating the stereotype from belly dance.
