These are NOT Romanis or ‘gypsies’.
This is not vintage.
These are belly dancers. Mishell, Bethany and Frédérique are in a bellydance troupe in the bay area that used to be called “Romani Urban Tribal Belly Dance”
Which is just really a cluster fuck of appropriation for a name…!!
I suppose, at least they changed their name to “Clandestine” now… nevertheless, this image is consistently mislabeled and used to represent us.. and it has nothing to do with anything “Romani”.
Stuff like this makes me SO Angry…
Re-blogging this here because I see A LOT of belly dance troupes/dancers who just LOVE using “gypsy” for their troupe or stage name. Here’s a lesson for beginning dancers: DON’T.
Not even beginning dancers… just ANY dance troupe.. you have no idea who really is Rromani, and for all you know that big break you might be hoping for… might not even contact you because they are Rromani and are offended by your troupe name.
Ever since I’ve learned that Gypsy is a racial slur, every time I see some of my fellow belly dancing friends using it, I get uncomfortable. I want to say something, but it takes a lot of courage to call your own friends out on it. I’m still trying to come up with a way to tell them and not be a bitch about it.
